18th Annual Jamestown Kite Fest is on Again

The 18th Annual Jamestown Kite Fest, a event designed to allow the public to participate in activities and viewings of kites, will take place over the weekend of June 9 and 10 at the Meidinger Park field in Jamestown. The event will run from 11:00 AM until 4:00 PM.

Renowned kite enthusiasts from across North America participate in the event. These enthusiasts include kite builders, stunt kite users (men and women who use a type of two or four-lined, trick-capable kite), and people who enjoy the general experience of kites.

The public event is a popular mainstay of Jamestown and is attended by all ages of citizens. A kite-building workshop is present to allow those who attend the event to create kites. Concession stands and a D.J. booth will also be at the event.

Among the attractions this year will be a wind garden. The wind garden is made up of instruments that create music as wind passes through them. Among the instruments are aeolian harps. A aeolian harp is composed of a wooden box and a sound board. Strings are stretched across the sound board and vibrate with the wind, creating music. “Come and hear the music” says Chris Dodson, maintainer of the wind garden and a central pillar of the Jamestown Kite Fest.

Past attractions have included 180 Go!, a team of quad-line stunt kite fliers who perform formations and aerial maneuvers coordinated with popular music.

“We always get a lot of people and we expect just as many this year” says Mike Gee, founder of the Jamestown Kite Fest and the Wings on Strings kite club. “It is always fun to show up and watch the kites and just have a good time” says Roberta Anderson of Jamestown.
